No big surprises. Mason Hooks sadly absent as expected, and Leyi Adebayo ‘24, who has not played much, also no longer listed.

Lineup?

F Zach Martini ‘24
F Caden Pierce ‘26
G Matt Allocco ‘24
G Deven Austin ‘26
G Xaivian Lee ‘26

G Blake Peters ‘25
G Jack Scott ‘26
G Dalen Davis ‘27 ?
F

Lots of talent, but not much length on this roster. Big opportunity for playing time for Vernon Collins, Phil Byriel, and Jacob Huggins if they can make the transition to being rotation players.

Hard to guess the line-up yet.
I guess we have to wonder if
Davis or one of ther frosh bigs
gets to start.
Also wonder if Austin will Abe ready
when the season starts. Have not
heard anything about his recovery
from a serious injury.

They do have 2 6-8 guys and a 6-10 guy on the roster? As for Mason Hooks? I don't get it? He looked good ih hs and then just loses interest in basketball?

I think Deven Austin is gonna miss most/all of non-conf. According to this Instagram post from 2 weeks ago -- https://www.instagram.com/p/CxZOhQCMgkf/ -- he's still going through rehab. I haven't seen any pics of him practicing either.

If there's a freshman starter again, I'm guessing Derek Sangster might step in for Deven. He's a 6-8 SF and he seems to be the most "decorated" freshman (like Pierce was).

Sangster looks good. But our most decorated freshman is Dalen Davis. He had big time offers including Kansas.

Davis definitely had the most impressive offers. I just meant Sangster had the most individual honors/awards (e.g. conference player of the year, 1st team all-state, conference champion).

It's always hard to project how an incoming freshman will do, but I like when they dominate whatever high school conference they played in, both individually and as a team. Pierce wasn't recruited by big time programs, but he was highly decorated for a great team.

Some interesting tidbits in Jerry Carino's season preview article:

https://www.app.com/story/sports/college/ 2023/10/1...

  • Quote:
One of them is freshman guard Dalen Davis, a 6-foot playmaker from Chicago who will have a major role this season.

“He’s tough,” Princeton coach Mitch Henderson said. “We’ve had high expectations for him.”

  • Quote:
A big key will be how quickly 6-foot-10 sophomore Vernon Collins can progress after seeing minimal time last winter.

  • Quote:
“I really didn’t like Coach back then, and I’m sure Xaivian has some issues with the way I’m going about it, but I think so highly of what he can do – and I want to make sure he sees it that way, too.”

Allocco, Pierce and Martini are locked to start, but I'm not sure about the other two spots. Especially since it looks like Austin won't be ready for a while. That last quote by Mitch makes me think Xavian might not start right away.

Non-conf could be an audition of sorts in that respect. Will it be Davis and Collins? Lee and Sangster? Peters is the best 3pt shooter, but I like him off the bench for 15-20mpg.

From the Trentonian:

https://www.trentonian.com/2023/10/16/princeton- me...

  • Quote:
Henderson said sophomore forward Deven Austin is doing well in his recovery from the torn ACL he sustained in February of last season.

While Austin hasn’t been cleared for contact, Henderson said, he is shooting around at practice and the coach is hopeful he’ll be ready at some point this season.

“He’s sort of where we thought he would be at this point,” Henderson said.

Doesn't sound like Austin will be back any time soon. Fortunately, he's just a sophomore and will have 2 more seasons to show his full potential.

I think Lee will start but think it's a bad sign if he doesn't - nobody else except Allocco can really create and even he isn't a do-everything guy.

As exciting as Xavian can be (lots of highlight reel plays), he can also be a bit careless with the ball, leading to bad TOs. Lee might be better served as a score-first 6th man this season. Not to mention he'll have 2 more years to be a starter.

I won't be surprised if Dalen Davis ends up starting next to Allocco. We know Mitch has no problem starting unusually talented freshmen (e.g. Jaelin, Caden) and it seems like part of the deal when you land a high-major recruit like Davis.

I agree Davis is the more likely starter.
He is also described as a plus defender,
and Lee was a bit of a liability at that end.
Without Austin, defense will be a challenge.
Let's hope the frosh can all contribute at that end.

that's what I mean by "bad sign if so" - this offense needs that player who's a better version of what Lee was last year.

if Davis wins the starting job away from him, great. if Lee's not good enough for it, bad sign.

Remember that Lee is a year older and may have corrected many of his deficiencies
